Coconut oil has many health benefits -- from aiding digestion to curing candida, it is a unique healthy fat comprised mostly of medium-chain fatty acids. But coconut oil also has many other uses. From tooth whitening to deodorant, coconut oil will change your life.
While coconut oil has many properties for improving your digestive health, those properties also contribute to overall health when using coconut oil in alternative ways
I last wrote about coconut oil over a year ago. At the time, I’d just discovered coconut oil as a superfood and I began adding it to just about everything I ate. But since then, I’ve discovered many other uses for coconut oil well beyond my breakfast omelette.
Coconut oil is a fat that is unique from other oils and fats. It contains high amounts of lauric acid. Lauric acid is converted to monolaurin, which has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-protozoa properties. Coconut oil is primarily a medium-chain fatty acid. Medium-chain fatty acids are easily digested. They are digested in the liver and immediately used for energy instead of being stored as fat. They also stimulate your metabolism. While coconut oil has many properties for improving your digestive health, those properties also contribute to overall health when using coconut oil in alternative ways.
9 Ways Coconut Oil Will Change Your Life
- Use it in your hair
I’ve been using coconut oil in my hair for about a year. I initially started using it because I used to always get an itchy and flaky scalp. I had to wash my hair with head and shoulders shampoo and conditioner every three to four days and it drove me insane that it would be itchy and flaky again just a few days after washing my hair. Now using coconut oil, I don’t have to wash my hair as often and it never gets itchy or flaky.
- Use it to moisturise your skin
When I rub coconut oil into my hair, I always rub any excess still on my hands onto my face. With coconut oil’s amazing antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, it is great for your skin. It’s also been found to increase hydration and reduce water loss in dry skin. Just make sure you wash it off before you leave the house or else it’ll look like you forgot to finish your morning beauty routine before you left. Same goes for your hair. If you don’t wash it out, it’ll continue running off your hair for the rest of the day.
- Use it to remove make-up
Now I don’t usually have to remove make up from my face but I’ve heard that coconut oil is the best product for removing it. The oil helps to lift the make-up and remove it easily. The fact that it’s natural is a bonus and its many health properties mean that you’re getting a good exfoliation and moisturising at the same time.
- Use it as shaving cream
I haven’t shaved my face for years because I love the 5 o’clock shadow look. I use a pair of facial clippers to trim my beard. However, you can use coconut oil as a shaving cream to shave any part of your body. The best thing about coconut oil is that it doubles as both a shaving cream and aftershave.
- Use it for oral health and even teeth whitening
One of the oldest uses of coconut oil is oil pulling. Oiling pulling is an ancient Ayurveda technique whereby you swish a tablespoon in your mouth on an empty stomach for twenty minutes. The action is supposed to draw toxins out of your body, primarily improving your oral health but also enhancing your overall health as well.
- Use it as a deodorant
Sweat isn’t actually very smelly. It is almost odourless. The smell of sweat comes from bacteria breaking down sweat on your skin. Coconut oil, with its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, along with a very strong natural scent, is very effective as a deodorant.
- Use it to treat sunburn
It’s advisable not to put anything onto sunburn when it’s fresh except for maybe rubbing a cut tomato on it. However, after a couple of days when the sunburn has eased, coconut oil can be very effective at repairing the skin.
- Use it to treat skin rashes and infections
For the reasons already listed and in a similar way to sunburn treatment, coconut oil can help to repair and improve skin rashes and infections. You could also use coconut oil on the skin for cuts and abrasions.
- Use it to help remove cellulite
Massage is great for cellulite as it stimulates blood flow and lymph circulation. The lymphatic system is the body’s waste disposal system. As coconut oil penetrates the skin easily, it breaks down fatty deposits in cells.
Coconut oil is not only great for cooking with; it also has many other health benefits. The vast benefits of coconut oil come from its anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-protozoa properties, as well as its ability to easily penetrate the skin. For these reasons, coconut oil is a very effective for treating skin conditions and enhancing overall health.
